Gingrich clearly does not understand history and comments with absolutely no logic whatsoever. To say the Palestinians are "invented people" because they were part of the Ottoman Empire and are really Arabs makes absolutely no sense for many reasons...
1) Palestine did exist as a League of Nations mandate after the fall of the Ottoman Empire following WWI.
2) Palestine has been "on the map" and is mentioned historically going all the way back to Herodotus in the 5th century BC!
3) If Palestine is "invented" then Israel is too because Israel was clearly off the map for roughly 2000 years before it's recognition by the U.S. in 1948.
4) Based on Gingrich's (lack of) logic, one could make an argument that Americans are an invented people because we're really just a hodgepodge of Europeans, Africans, and Asians.
This is absolutely ridiculous and still has me baffled days after hearing this ludicrous remark.
