The United States is not hated because others are jealous of our freedom. They hate us because "we" (I had nothing to do with it!) have meddled with their countries, typically supporting ruthless dictators.
Historically, you can go back further to demonstrate the uneasy relationship between Iran and the US, but this is a good starting point to gain an understanding of how we have ended up at the brink of war.
