The King family won a civil lawsuit against the US government in which it was ruled that government agencies were guilty of "wrongful death" in the assassination of Dr. King. It is the only trial ever conducted on the MLK assassination because James Earl Ray, the alleged assassin, signed a confession at the advice of his government appointed attorney. From the time of his sentencing to the time of his death in 1998, Ray worked for a trial, but was denied.
