Support for the Web Bill Wanes as Protests Spread

"...on Wednesday this formidable old guard was forced to make way for the new as Web powerhouses backed by Internet activists rallied opposition to the legislation through Internet blackouts and cascading criticism, sending an unmistakable message to lawmakers grappling with new media issues: Don’t mess with the Internet."

Two stories I can share about today:

  • I had four students in my first period class ask me about the bill when they were doing some online research.  Apparently they were aware of it before they even walked through my door.  In fact, I was taken aback by their awareness of SOPA and PIPA.  All four showed disgust not for Tumblr or Wikipedia for shutting down their sites, but for the criminals in the District of Columbia!  That brought a smile to my face.
  • Also, an English teacher told me he had a lengthy conversation in class with some juniors.  They informed him that they had called Senator Lautenberg (D-NJ) to voice their opposition to the bill despite not having the right to vote in our political system yet.
Today was a good day...
