Um, duh! The Founders knew they were breaking the law. When has secession been carried out legally? Don't mistaken "illegal" with "immoral." According to the Natural Rights principle, the colonists had every right to declare independence.
It sounds like someone is still bitter they lost a war over 200 years ago.
